I found this specimen on my bathroom door this afternoon. I can't find it in my books - it is quite big at 112 mm dia. Possibly a Caligo or Morpho sp. The first photo shows the butterfly on the ceiling of the hall outside my bathroom. I would like to show a close-up of the strange whitish things on the hind wings, but as we are only allowed 3 photos on a post, then I will have to send it separately

Nymphalidae, Satyrinae, Brassolini, Eryphanis sp., and it looks like being Eryphanis automedon, Automedon Giant Owl.

Here is a close-up of the appendages on the hind wings. What are they?

Looks like being scent scales or scent organs, sometimes placed on the wings or abdomen. In Eryphanis polyxena was this secret filled organ described for the first times. In other members of the tribe these organs were not present and in Caligo these organs might produce scent secet for several weeks.
