I think it's a metalmark, because the antennae are close together.

It looks fat, like a female, but the forelegs are brushlike – are those more like a male metalmark too? Or are those Nymphalid-like forelegs?

Male riodinidae have the first 2 legs brushlike, similar to Nymphalidae. Females don't, as I understand it, see DeVries Vol II, pg 37. Look in my Southern Amazonia book, most of the Euselasia only show 4 legs, these are males.

how about Nymphidium hesperinum? David Geale just sent me this shot from tingo Maria, Peru, and it looks very close to yours. Too bad one of you didn't get the other side!

Looks like the closest match by far, even though there are some obvious differences. Maybe just a different subspecies?

That is a general rule though. There are a few exceptions.
