Hi Bob,

This is a prepona, i.e., a leafwing in the genus Prepona or Archaeoprepona. I don't think it is identifiable with this view. The underside would show a diagnostic pattern.

I suspect this is your Turquoise Emperor, Doxocopa laurentina! See my photo under your other Doxocopa for comparision. The blue can look very metallic and go almost all the way to the edge of the wings. The apex looks like an Emperor, w/the falcate tips.

Thanks Kim
I now find that thanks to you and the forum I have sorted out all of my 2006 Argentine butterfly photos - well done everyone - what a splendid service!! You have not heard the last from me however - I have numerous other photos, particularly from Costa Rica, but they need to be scanned in. Also I'm back in Costa Rica next winter.

Cheers and thanks again - Bob

Hola!

I confirm: this butterfly is a male of Doxocopa laurentia laurentia; also known as its senior synonym seraphina; females are totally distinct, mimetic of Adelpha; in such a way that in South Brazil this butterfly is popularly known as "mal-casado" ("wrongly-married"); noteworthy some also call it “Preponinha” for obvious reasons.. Larvae live exclusively on Celtis spp., especially iguanae, popularly known as "talas" in Argentina and "unha-de-gato" in Brazil. I attach photos of both larval cryptic variations and pupa, which is unique among the Apaturinae in bearing a dorsal spine (the foodplant belongs in a subgenus of Celtis - Momysia - that is characterized by bearing spines); and ALL taxa in this species-group have similar and indistinguishable immatures: laurentia laurentia, laurentia lavinia, laurentia chlorotaenia, cyane cyane, cyane mexicana, cyane burmeisteri, cherubina cherubina, cherubina thalysia and the endemic Nicaraguan-Costa Rican excelsa. Adults and immatures from this last species can be seen at Dan Janzen database: http://janzen.sas.upenn.edu/caterpillars/database.lasso

Greetings
Jorge

Awwwwwwwww! The caterpillars of these are so cute! Loving the antenna like protrusions. The pupae of these reminds me of some of the Pierdae ( sp? ) butterflies.

Nice photos! Hope see one of these in the future in person.
