The lowlands have the most diversity, but I prefer mid elevations in the Andes, better temperature and more interesting stuff. I like Tambopata Research Center, or Cristalino Jungle Lodge for the lowlands, but Cristalino is in Mato Grosso, Brazil. A week isn't very long, as it will take a day or two to get there. My personal favorite in the cloud forest is Cock of the Rock Lodge on the road from Cusco down to the Manu, but again it takes at least 2 days to get there from the US. You have to fly in to Lima, then fly to Cusco and then 8 hours by car on a bad mountain road. August or Sept should be ok, that is more of the dry season in the lowlands. At Cock of the Rock the rains usually start in Oct/Nov, and there is usually more flying after the rains start. But anytime is good, especially if it is new for you, then everything will be exciting. Good luck!
